At The Promised Child Inc, we address the root challenges affecting children in Liberia - hunger, low literacy, and lack of essential resources.
These issues are deeply connected. A child who is hungry cannot focus, and a child who cannot read faces limited opportunities for the future.
Liberia is ranked 112 out of 123 countries on the Global Hunger Index, placing it among the most food-insecure countries in the world. This means hunger is not occasional - it is widespread and deeply impacts children and families.
Our work is focused in areas such as Bong County, a rural region where access to food, quality education, and basic resources is limited. In communities like these, children often face multiple barriers at once - hunger, low school attendance, and limited learning opportunities.
In many cases, households are led by women who are working to provide for their families with limited resources, making children especially vulnerable to food insecurity and falling behind in school.
Our programs are designed to respond to these realities - supporting the whole child through food, education, and essential support.
Read to Grow is our flagship program, implemented in partnership with Galai Community School in rural Bong County.
Children in this region face significant barriers to learning due to hunger and extremely low literacy levels. Many students are unable to read at even the most basic level, and school attendance is often impacted by lack of food.
Read to Grow integrates education and nutrition through:

By addressing both hunger and education, Read to Grow creates a pathway for children to succeed in school and beyond. It not only improves literacy outcomes but also equips children with practical skills and access to food - creating long-term impact.
As support grows, we aim to expand this program to reach more students, strengthen teaching resources, and increase food production within the school, creating a more sustainable and far-reaching impact over time.
Our feeding program takes place every Saturday at our office in Congo Town, Monrovia.
In urban communities like Congo Town, many children do not have access to consistent meals. Some go days without proper food, making it difficult to focus, grow, and feel secure.
While this program currently operates once per week, it plays a critical role in supporting children who may otherwise go without food. It provides not only nourishment, but also care, stability, and a sense of belonging.
As support grows, we aim to increase the number of days meals are provided, allowing us to reach more children more consistently and reduce the gaps between meals.
Every contribution helps move us closer to that goal.
Barrels of Love is our initiative to send essential supplies from the United States directly to Liberia.
Many children lack basic items necessary for daily life and education, including school materials, clothing, and hygiene supplies.
Each barrel is carefully packed with:
These barrels help bridge the gap between communities - delivering tangible support that directly impacts children's lives. They ensure that children have the tools they need to participate in school with dignity and confidence.
As support grows, we aim to increase the number of barrels shipped, expand the types of resources provided, and reach more communities in need, ensuring that more children receive consistent and meaningful support.
